Safety at Its Finest: JCI Jones Chemicals Hosts Evening TRANSCAER Training for First Responders
Safety is at its finest when industry partners come together to strengthen emergency preparedness and share knowledge with the communities they serve. JCI Jones Chemicals, Inc., Westlake (Natrium), and Indian Springs Manufacturing demonstrated that commitment on October 20, 2026, through a collaborative, modified TRANSCAER®-style chlorine training event hosted at JCI Jones Chemicals’ Caledonia facility in Western New York.
The evening session brought together local county HAZMAT teams and town fire departments for hands-on instruction in chlorine emergency response. The program grew out of a tabletop exercise conducted in August, during which emergency responders identified a need for additional training on chlorine emergency response kits. JCI Jones Chemicals took that feedback to heart, organizing a program designed to help meet that need.
Held from 6:30 to 9:45 p.m., the training welcomed more than 55 attendees representing 12 organizations, including four county HAZMAT teams. More than half of the participants were volunteer firefighters, making the evening format a valuable opportunity to accommodate responders balancing training with other commitments.
Participants received instruction on the A, B and C chlorine emergency response kits, general chlorine information, troubleshooting railcar valves, pressure relief devices (PRDs), container valves and hookups. The program also included a tour of JCI Jones Chemicals’ Caledonia chlorine shop, offering attendees an additional opportunity to learn about chlorine operations and equipment.
Instruction was provided by Kevin Chambers, Darryl Mitchell, Chris Joy and Mike Croke of JCI Jones Chemicals, along with Ray Racha of Indian Springs Manufacturing. Chris Joy served as the event’s host. Special thanks go to Indian Springs Manufacturing and Westlake (Natrium) for supplying multiple training props that supported the hands-on program.
The event exemplifies the kind of safety leadership The Chlorine Institute encourages throughout its membership. CI regularly encourages member companies to host safety and emergency response training opportunities and share their efforts with the Institute so these initiatives can be highlighted across the industry.
Through JCI Jones Chemicals’ initiative and the support of Westlake and Indian Springs Manufacturing, this training brought industry expertise directly to the emergency responders who help protect local communities. It is a strong example of member collaboration in action and a reminder that investing in preparedness is a shared responsibility.
The Chlorine Institute encourages members to share their safety training initiatives and accomplishments with CI so these efforts can be recognized and shared with the broader industry.
