Al Cowie - Univar Solutions

Member Spotlight,

May Member Spotlight - Al Cowie (Univar Solutions)

CI: Tell us a little about yourself, and what you do?

I am currently in my 43rd year with Univar Solutions. I started as a Quality Control Chemist and then worked in Regulatory, Safety & Health and Operations and recently returned to Safety & Health with a focus on Process Safety Management.

CI: When did you first become involved at CI? What activities have you been involved in at CI?

I do not remember when I started my involvement with the Chlorine Institute other than it was in the late 80’s. Originally I was involved in HESS’s predecessor and then with the CSIT. I have also worked with Emergency response at TRANSCAER events.

CI: What is something interesting about you that few would know or guess?

I am a private pilot and fly a 1968 Beechcraft Musketeer. I also teach motorcycle safety classes.

CI: Tell us about your favorite CI memory or success story.

There are many but the information and training provided by CI on Site Security Plans was a great benefit in development of our plan.

CI: What do you value most from your CI membership?

The involvement in task groups and the network connections you make when working in these groups. Being able to discuss concerns with the connections you made outside of these meetings are a great benefit.

CI: What advice do you have for early career professionals in the chlor-alkali industry?

Don’t be afraid to get involved on various task groups, they are such a great opportunity for learning and networking.

“Al brings over forty years of experience and know-how in chlorine packaging and sodium hypochlorite manufacturing to CI. He has chaired numerous committees and task group during his tenure as a member of the Product Stewardship Issue Team. He has been responsible for Univar’s product stewardship efforts in the Cincinnati and Pittsburg areas for an entire generation. Al has always stayed true to his Cincinnati roots; he has a BS in Chemistry from the University of Cincinnati and an MBA from Xavier University. He is a great supporter of Cincinnati-based sport teams and an even greater supporter of CI’s mission.”
