Michael Smith - KIK Corporation

Last week, CI had the pleasure of hosting our newest member of the Board of Directors, Michael Smith of KIK Consumer Products. Michael brings more than 24 years of manufacturing experience in the metals and chemical industries, along with a background in Emergency Services as an EMT-Paramedic. Throughout his career, he has held leadership roles in Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS), Operations, and Continuous Improvement. We recently caught up with Michael to learn more about his career, CI involvement, and advice for future industry leaders.
CI: Tell us a little about yourself, and your current role:
I am the Vice President of Operations for KIK Consumer Products, LLC. With more than 24 years of international manufacturing experience, I have held progressive roles in Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS), Operations, and Continuous Improvement, primarily within the metal and chemical industries.
I began my manufacturing career with industry leaders such as Nucor Steel, Johnson Controls, and Precision Castparts, where I built a strong foundation in risk mitigation and operational excellence. Prior to manufacturing, I spent a decade in Emergency Services as an EMT-Paramedic while completing my B.S. in Environmental Management. During that time, I also earned certifications in Confined Space Rescue, Radiation Safety (REACTS), ACLS, and PALS.
CI: When did you first become involved at CI?
I became involved with CI three years ago. Within several months of joining, I was able to fill a vacancy on the HESS Issue Team. Since then, I have worked to enhance KIK’s presence within CI. When I joined, KIK had only one or two active members involved; today, KIK team members are active on every Issue Team and Task Group.
CI: What is something interesting about you that few would know or guess?
My father was in the Army, so I had the opportunity to grow up overseas. I was born in Okinawa, Japan, and spent much of my childhood in Germany before moving to the United States at age 12.
CI: Tell us about your favorite CI memory or success story.
My favorite CI success story has been watching members of my team experience individual growth and success while taking active roles within CI and its various task groups.
CI: What advice do you have for early career professionals in the chlor-alkali industry?
Get involved early and make a difference!
CI: What do you value most from your CI membership?
I value the passion that CI members bring and their shared desire to make a difference in the chlor-alkali industry.
